Overview


Tianjin University of Science and Technology (TUST) was founded in 1958 as one of the earliest four light industry universities by the Ministry of Light Industry. It is a key university in Tianjin jointly financed by the central and local government. TUST is the only university in Binhai Area that offers a whole range of degree programs from Bachelor’s degree programs to PhD programs, and it is listed in many Chinese elite university programs, such as National Program of Introducing Talents of Disciplines to Universities, MOE Premium Engineer Cultivation Program, Tianjin First-class University and First-class Discipline Project, etc..

TUST has campuses in Hexi District and Binhai Area. Its campus covers an area of 154 hectare with around 900,000㎡ of construction area. There are 15 colleges, with 27,000 full-time students and more than 2,000 faculty members.  

TUST enjoys a very convenient location by the Bohai Sea and Haihe River. Binhai campus is located in one of the twin cities of Tianjin—Binhai New Area, and it is very close to Zhongguangcun Science Park, Sino-Singapore Eco-city, National Marine Museum, TEDA Aircraft-carrier Theme Park and Tangku Forest Park. Hexi Campus is located in Liulin, a subcenter of Tianjin. It is close to Tianjin Culture Center, National Design Center, National Convention and Exhibition Center, Binhai International Airport, Haihe Education Park.

TUST has a national key discipline in fermentation engineering. It offers 57 undergraduate programs, 32 of them are listed as national or municipal premium programs, 3 Sino-Foreign jointly run programs, 20 tier-one master’s degree programs, 4 tier-one Ph.D. programs and a professional Doctor of Engineering program in bio-medicine. TUST agricultural sciences, chemistry, biology and biochemistry, engineering, material science are listed as top 1% disciplines in essential science indicators (ESI), food science and engineering is listed world 38th by Shanghai Ranking, the polymer science is ranked world 21st in the US News and World Report.

TUST aims at the frontier of science and serves the need of national strategy, implements research reinforcement plan and develops a 4 in 1 research working mechanism that combines policies, platforms, projects and talents. There are 6 national research centers including national key lab on food nutrition and safety, national key lab on bio-source fiber manufacturing technology, 40 some ministerial and provincial level labs. TUST has won over one hundred national and provincial awards for its excellence in research. Major grants include national key research and development plan, national natural science Prominent Youth Fund, etc. TUST collaborates with numerous research centers and businesses to build a science park and many technology development institutes. TUST Science Park is listed as city-level university science park par excellence, a model technology transferring unit.

TUST has 6 double-employed academicians, scores of national and provincial talents, a national key lab and a national virtual reality teaching center. TUST always keeps serving the country and people in mind and has become a pilot university for Chinese MOE’s Comprehensive Students Cultivation program. National Makers’ Center, Sino-US Youth Makers Exchange Center, joint bio-engineering College with CAS are a few examples that TUST offers to its entrepreneurial students to practice innovation. TUST students won many rewards in the National University Entrepreneurship Competition and Internet Plus National Innovation Competition. The TUST gym(24,000㎡) is the only A level gym in Binhai Area.

TUST’s international vision is demonstrated in many international joint research projects, overseas talents introduction projects, international conferences and joint degree programs. TUST keeps close contacts with universities and research institutes in over 40 countries, setting up a Confucius Institute and a Confucius classroom to promote the Chinese language and culture worldwide. Every year, many foreign students come to TUST to study Chinese or join degree programs. TUST collaborated with many universities in the US, Australia, Japan, Canada, UK, Finland, and many other countries to offer TUST students second campus experience in 2+2, 1+2+1, 3+1, 3+1+1 programs. The graduates of TUST are highly competitive in the job market.
