TUST Helds Activities to Commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the Birth of
Mr. Long Yanquan Academic Authority of Pulp and Paper

On September 21, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of Tianjin University of Science and Technology (TUST), we held a series of activities in Binhai campus to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Mr. Long Yanquan, a leading scholar in pulping and papermaking, and to commemorate his outstanding academic achievements and lofty morality. Chen Kefu, Mr. Long Yanquan's disciple, and an academician of South China University of Technology attended the event. Zhang Meiyun, former vice president of Shaanxi University of Science & Technology; Sun Cheng, former vice president of Tianjin Vocational Institute; and Dong Yiping, executive director of Vinda International Holdings Limited attended the event. Han Jinyu, deputy secretary of the CPC Committee and President of TUST, attended the event and delivered a warm speech at the conference. Former leaders including Zhang Guansheng, Tan Mingmin and Yang Shuhui attended the event. Mr. Long's family and student representatives, experts and scholars at home and abroad, alumni and teachers and students gathered together to express their deep memories of Mr. Long. Xia Jingbo, deputy secretary of the CPC Committee of TUST, presided over the series of activities.
Mr. Long Yanquan is a famous scholar in the pulping and papermaking industry in China. He is one of the founders of pulp and paper engineering education, the academic leader of pulp and paper discipline and the first doctoral supervisor of papermaking specialty in China. Loving and devoted to the education cause, in his teaching career, he set a good example for students with both percept and practice by examples and rigorous scholarship, cultivating a large number of professionals in the pulp and paper industry for the country. Under the leadership of Mr. Long, our university was among the first batch of master's degree granting points approved by the Ministry of Education in 1981, and the second batch of doctoral degree granting points approved by the Ministry of Education in 1983, which was also the first doctoral degree granting point among all universities opening pulp and paper discipline in China. It is Mr. Long's hard work and unremitting efforts that have laid a solid foundation for the development of pulp and paper engineering specialty in TUST.
At 2:18 p.m., the unveiling ceremony of the bronze statue commemorating the 100th anniversary of Mr. Long's birth was held in the U-shape square in Building 4, Binhai Campus. Chen Kefu, Mr. Long Yanquan's disciple and an academician of South China University of Technology, and HanJinyu, president of TUST unveiled the bronze statue together.
Han Jinyu, president of TUST, delivered a speech at the ceremony. He pointed out that on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the founding of Tianjin University of Science and Technology, the completion of bronze statue of Mr. Long in TUST reflects admiration of people who have ties with TUST towards Mr. Long. Mr. Long enabled us to sense his feelings of being an educator with high spirits and wisdom, leaving behind a simple scholarship as a scientist, and recall his wonderful teachings on the stage. In the minds of those who have ties with TUST, Mr. Long is not only an individual, but also an outstanding representative of several generations of TUST. He has long since been closely integrated with the cause of TUST. President Han called on all TUST people to always remember Mr. Long's entrustment, to work together to overcome difficulties and build TUST into a high-level university of science and technology with distinctive features.
In front of the bronze statue, Academician Chen consoled Mr. Long Yanquan that his entrustment has been accomplished through the efforts of generations of papermakers, and his concern of the environmental pollution caused by the papermaking industry has been addressed. Academician Chen expressed the hope that the teachers and students of Tianjin University of Science and Technology would inherit and carry forward the noble virtues and academic spirit of Mr. Long, so as to jointly build a brighter future for the university.
At the ceremony, Mr. Long's daughters Long Xiaodu and Long Xiaorong expressed their heartfelt gratitude to Academician Chen and the university on behalf of their families, and presented Academician Chen a precious photo of him and Mr. Long Yanquan. Family representatives and disciples of Mr. Long Yanquan present flowers to the statue. The ceremony was heartwarming and touching.
Afterwards, the Symposium of Mr. Long Yanquan's 100th Birthday Anniversary and Seminar on Long Yanquan's Academic Thoughts was held in the First Lecture Hall in the library of Binhai campus. The meeting was attended by Chen Kefu, academician of South China University of Technology, Professor Zhang Meiyun, former vice president of Shaanxi University of Science & Technology, Professor He Yanling at Xi'an Jiaotong University, Professor Zhu Yongqiang at Shanghai Institute of Technology, Ms. Long Xiaorong, Mr. Long's second daughter, Professor Liu Zhong, dean of the College of Papermaking Science and Technology, Professor Pei Jicheng at the College of Papermaking Science and Technology, and other guests. They reviewed Mr. Long Yanquan's remarkable career and introduced his significant contributions to the papermaking industry and the education cause in different periods from the perspectives of teaching, scientific research and life, highly appraising Mr. Long's achievements in the academic field and his lofty teaching morality, and fully expressing the admiration and remembrance for Mr. Long.
In his concluding remarks, President Han Jingyu pointed out that Mr. Long Yanquan's life is characterized by national and school love, diligence and devotion, and pursuit of truth. In order to honor the memory of Mr. Long, we should carry forward his diligent, rigorous and truth-seeking academic attitude as well as the spirit of forging ahead and innovation, improve our overall strength of teaching and scientific research and academic level, and make new and greater contributions to national and local economic and social development. In order to honor the memory of Mr. Long, we should learn from him to love the party and the country, be dedicated to education and science, be strict with ourselves, and be willing to help others, so as to constantly improve ourselves and make extraordinary achievements in ordinary teaching and education. President Han Jingyu expressed the hope that we would carry on the unfinished lifework of Mr. Long Yanquan, carry forward his scientific and academic spirit, and further promote the development of pulping and papermaking in China, so as to make new and greater contributions to building a high-level university of science and technology with distinctive features.
